Abstract | An essay critiques the assumptions and philosophy of writers and educators in English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) education concerning the role of humanism in ESL instruction, examining what can usefully be adopted from humanism and how it can be reconciled with product-focused, genre-based approaches.
